The decade of the seventies was an exciting time in the advancement of technology. Not only was the modern era of computing introduced, via the world’s first microprocessor, this was also the age of the pocket calculators. This was the decade when video games came into play. One of the leaders in the field was Atari. They introduced the enormously popular arcade game known as “Pong.”
The 1970′s was also the beginning of Fiber Optics. This was also the first period in which the United States and Europe realized that the larger, heavier automobiles needed to be re-designed. The first of the lightweight, fuel efficient cars hit the drawing boards. One of the popular outcomes was the Volkswagen Golf GTI. Although the U.S. seemed to lag behind GM and Ford eventually produced some vehicles, namely the Vega and the Pinto, which were both compact and fuel efficient.
After the introduction of the computer and robot Japan saw a huge growth in mass-produced automotive quality. This brought about lightweight, fuel efficient, and environmentally friendly automobiles. This also brought about a demand for cars such as the Honda Civic as well as the Toyota Corolla. This was the decade that the Japanese made their strong presence felt in the international marketing of cars. The 70′s also introduced the family household to the microwave oven. Cassette tapes, VHS, Betamax all competed against one another for more sales. It was truly a decade which is currently playing a major role in our technology today.
